As reported by Automation World in their article “Building Machines Humans Can Work With,” the world is transitioning from Industry 4.0, which focused on networking factories and increasing automation, to Industry 5.0, which emphasizes human-machine collaboration. While Industry 4.0 has revolutionized mass production through AI, machine learning (ML), and precision robotics, there are limits to how much further automation can progress without human input.
Industry 5.0 aims to bring humans back into the production process by combining their creativity and adaptability with the precision and efficiency of machines. Unlike machines, which are limited by their inability to predict outcomes with minimal data or adapt quickly to new, unexpected situations, humans excel in these areas. This shift allows manufacturers to leverage the best of both worlds—machines’ efficiency and humans’ problem-solving abilities—resulting in customized manufacturing processes that go beyond mere standardization.
The European Commission has been at the forefront of conceptualizing Industry 5.0, which aims to place workers’ well-being at the core of manufacturing processes. This new industrial model seeks not only to drive productivity but also to provide long-term prosperity while respecting environmental limitations.
